Lists with This Book. Czech must read classic! At first I wasn’t sure if it was the translations since a few were good and some stories may just have not had much to bring to English.
Dreamlike and nightmarish, horrible and beautiful, Kytice is a handful of wild-flowers we are lucky to have dried, preserved and errben between pages for posterity. I aim to tell a story through my photographs. Often I’d find I’d get stuck and getting up and walking around actually reben it!

We’ll end with another of the poems from “Kytice” – “The Bouquet”. I can’t speak Czech, so cannot comment on how accurate the translation is, but kyttice certainly captures the feeling of a true fairy tale. I read the version translated by Marcela Sulak with artwork by Alen Divis.
Kytice was inspired by Erben’s love of Slavonic myth and the folklore surrounding such creatures as the Noonday Witch and the Water Goblin. Actually, Im interested in how its errben translated.

The format is a little difficult to get used to, but Kytice is an astonishing piece of work on behalf of both the author, Karel Erben, and perhaps even more so, the translator, Susan Reynolds.
I re-read it every two years or so and there’s always something new to find and admire about these timeless poems. But now, as I read these Erben fairy tales in poetic format, I can see, plainly and with lucidity, that these stories did not deserve the quality of translation they were given.
